Paolo Cherchi Usai è un critico cinematografico e saggista italiano. È stato direttore del National Film and Sound Archive of Australia dal 2004 al 2008, della Haghefilm Foundation di Amsterdam (2008-2011), ed è attualmente Senior Curator del Moving Image Department al George Eastman Museum di Rochester, New York.
Nel 2014 ha curato a Rochester The Nitrate Picture Show, primo festival sulla conservazione del film. Senior Curator del Moving Image Department al George Eastman Museum di Rochester, New York, è cofondatore della L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation; delle Giornate del Cinema Muto di Pordenone; di Domitor, associazione internazionale per lo studio del cinema delle origini. Ha diretto dal 2004 al 2008 il National Film and Sound Archive of Australia. Adjunct Professor of Film alla University of Rochester e Resident Curator del Telluride Film Festival, dirige la rivista bimestrale «Segnocinema». I suoi scritti sulla storia e il restauro del cinema sono stati pubblicati e tradotti in venti lingue; fra questi si segnalano tre monografie su Georges Méliès (1983), Giovanni Pastrone (1985) e D.W. È autore di due lungometraggi: Passio (2007), adattamento del suo volume L’ultimo spettatore (Il Castoro, 1999), tradotto in inglese sotto il titolo The Death of Cinema: History, Cultural Memory, and the Digital Dark Age (BFI Publishing, 2001), con prefazione di Martin Scorsese; e Picture (2015), con musiche originali composte dalla Alloy Orchestra. È stato insignito nel 2002 dal Ministero della Cultura francese con il titolo di Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
