Almost a year ago, in the fall of 2022, we approached Nanni Moretti with the idea of publishing this monographic issue about his filmmaking activity. He had just wrapped filming Il sol dell’avvenire, and was beginning editing. About the same time, he was overseeing the restoration of Sogni d’oro in the Cineteca Nazionale’s lab (inside the Centro Sperimentale), which was later screened at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival. For this publication all Moretti’s films were reviewed ex novo, by critics of very different ages: some of them were not even born when his first films, such as Io sono un autarchico and Ecce Bombo, were released. The reviews are complemented by essays by great writers, both Italian and international as well as reprints of some of the articles that appeared at the time in newspapers, or in books that are no longer in print, yet deserve to be reread. When in April 2023 we had the pleasure of watching Il sol dell’avvenire, the satisfaction in producing this issue was, if possible, doubled. The film is both a summa of Nanni Moretti’s own film philosophy and a fitting new departure towards new stories, fresh experiences. During the 2023-2024 season, Moretti will focus on directing two plays by Natalia Ginzburg, but more films will come soon, we are sure. Meanwhile, we believe you will find it highly entertaining to look back over his career through the writings featured in this issue.

Paolo Di Paolo, romanziere e saggista, collabora con “la Repubblica”. “L’Espresso” e “Vanity Fair”, . Ha pubblicato libri-intervista con scrittori italiani come Antonio Debenedetti, Raffaele La Capria, Dacia Maraini e ha scritto anche libri per ragazzi e saggi letterari. È autore di Ogni viaggio è un romanzo. Libri, partenze, arrivi (Roma 2007, Milano 2014) e di Raccontami la notte in cui sono nato (Roma 2008, Milano 2014). Ha lavorato anche per il teatro: Il respiro leggero dell’Abruzzo (2001), scritto per Franca Valeri; L’innocenza dei postini, messo in scena al Napoli Teatro Festival Italia 2010.
