Artistic Director Franco Bernini
Writing has existed for thousands of years, but in cinema and serial storytelling, it has reached one of its most complete forms, achieving a new, profound narrative density.
During the three years of the Screenwriting course, all aspects of cinematic and serial writing are explored through a series of lessons, specific exercises, and workshops that equip students with all the tools of screenwriting.
Various writing methods are studied: those rooted in the rich tradition of Italian cinema and more recent approaches. Above all, students are encouraged to find their own original narrative path, refining their awareness of their abilities, talents, and creativity.
In the first year, each student writes the concept and treatment for their own original feature film, studies various cinematic storytelling theories, masters the tools of storytelling, and collaborates on the production of a short film. Students collectively create a film adaptation, may participate in the production of a documentary, attend a theoretical course on TV seriality that culminates in the individual writing of an episode for a series.
In the second year, each student writes the screenplay for their own feature film, develops a short film in collaboration with other courses, participates in a workshop with acting students, contributes to the collective creation of an original concept for a TV series, creates their own original TV concept, works in a writers’ room, engages with writing in various cinematic genres, and writes a script set in different historical periods.
During the third year, each student focuses on writing their ‘graduation film,’ develops additional concepts and treatments with particular attention to their feasibility, collaborates with their peers to write a complete miniseries, and participates in three workshops dedicated to forms of writing not previously explored. They also present their projects in a pitching session, can undertake internships, and participate in the Erasmus programme.
