As a matter of fact, Gianni Amelio has been a teacher of the Directing course at the prestigious school on several occasions. But, first and foremost, he is a major director, one of the greatest among those currently working in Italian cinema. And he is an all-round cinema lover: to him, filmmaking is a complex art that encompasses several disciplines: directing, of course, but also writing, reading novels \u2013 which sometimes can start out as inspiration and evolve into something completely different \u2013, acting and that special empathy with actors, and before that, production; on top of all that, of course, there is a love for his colleagues&#8217; work, which Amelio has watched, devoured and digested, and which he knows like no other. The director opens up in a long, fascinating and previously unpublished interview by Alberto Crespi and Emanuela Martini, who is also the editor of this issue.
