L\u2019INVENZIONE PI\u00d9 BELLA<\/strong> (<em>20<sup>th<\/sup> Century. The greatest invention<\/em>) curated by <strong>Cesare Petrillo<\/strong> and organized by <strong>CSC \u2013 Cineteca Nazionale<\/strong> with the support of the <strong>Ministry of Culture<\/strong> and in collaboration with <strong>Circuito Cinema<\/strong> is coming to an end. Screening at the <strong>\u201cQuattro Fontane\u201d movie theatre<\/strong> in Rome every <strong>Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday matinees<\/strong>, XX SECOLO has attracted more than 10,000 viewers, thus confirming how successful this format is: this season, over 200 masterpieces of film history have been brought back to the silver screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 4<sup>th<\/sup> segment opens with <strong>LUCHINO VISCONTI<\/strong>, the \u2018red count\u2019 of Italian cinema, the protagonist, if not father of neorealism (it is generally believed that his <strong><em>Obsession<\/em><\/strong>, 1943, kickstarted the movement), author of allegedly impossible adaptations (<strong><em>La terra trema<\/em><\/strong>, from Giovanni Verga\u2019s novel \u201cThe House by the Medlar-Tree\u201d; <strong><em>Le notti bianche<\/em><\/strong>; <strong><em>The Leopard<\/em><\/strong>; <strong><em>Death in Venice<\/em><\/strong>) who managed to depict with equal accuracy the proletarian family of <strong><em>Rocco and His Brothers<\/em><\/strong> and the steel magnates of <strong><em>The Damned<\/em><\/strong>, as well as the dream of a mother who wants her little girl to become a film star (<strong><em>Beautiful<\/em><\/strong>) and the twilight years of a professor secluded in his own house museum (<strong><em>Conversation Piece<\/em><\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In parallel with the cinema of Visconti, <strong>ROMAN POLANSKI<\/strong> will entertain the audience with a selection of titles beginning from his striking debut feature (<strong><em>Knife in the Water<\/em><\/strong>, 1962, his only movie in Polish language soon to be nominated at the Academy Awards for best foreign film) and including his early masterpieces made in France (<strong><em>Repulsion<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Cul-de-sac<\/em><\/strong>). The Polanski retrospective follows up with a delightful comedy such as the Hammerlike horror parody <strong><em>Dance of the Vampires<\/em>\/<em>The Fearless Vampire Killers<\/em><\/strong> but also a true horror like <strong><em>Rosemary\u2019s Baby<\/em><\/strong>, and then the reinvention of the noir with <strong><em>Chinatown<\/em><\/strong>, the essay on Kafkaesque anxiety <strong><em>The Tenant<\/em><\/strong>, the overwhelming adaptation <strong><em>Tess<\/em><\/strong>, and an exercise in Hitchcockian suspense (and invaluable humour) such as <strong><em>Frantic<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Actress, comedian, star: there isn\u2019t a definition that wouldn\u2019t suit the greatest icon of the twentieth century, i.e., <strong>MARILYN MONROE<\/strong>. We will screen two of the masterpieces that made her immortal (<strong><em>Gentlemen Prefer Blondes<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Some Like It Hot<\/em><\/strong>) but also her last film, <strong><em>The Misfits<\/em><\/strong>, not to mention a true rarity like the low-budget thriller <strong><em>Don&#8217;t Bother to Knock<\/em><\/strong>, the movie that revealed her to the general audience, i.e. <strong><em>Niagara<\/em><\/strong>, and screwball comedies such as <strong><em>How to Marry a Millionaire<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>The Prince and the Showgirl<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Disavowing the infamous (and much too quoted) sentence of Truffaut as a film critic, who would dismiss British cinema as \u201ca contradiction in terms,\u201d XX CENTURY pays homage precisely to <strong>BRITISH FILM<\/strong> from 1941 to 1985, offering a survey of the talents active before and behind the film camera. Great directors such as David Lean (<strong><em>Brief Encounter<\/em><\/strong>), John Schlesinger (<strong><em>A Kind of Loving<\/em><\/strong><em>,<strong> Far from the Madding Crowd<\/strong>,<strong> Sunday Bloody Sunday<\/strong><\/em>), Karel Reisz (<strong><em>Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment<\/em><\/strong>), Tony Richardson (<strong><em>The Entertainer<\/em><\/strong>,<strong><em> The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner<\/em><\/strong><em>,<strong> Tom Jones<\/strong><\/em>) up to Stephen Frears (<strong><em>My Beautiful Laundrette<\/em><\/strong>). But also performers who gave body and voice to unforgettable characters, from Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier (<strong><em>That Hamilton Woman<\/em><\/strong>) to Alan Bates (<strong><em>Women in Love<\/em><\/strong>), Donald Sutherland, Julie Christie (<strong><em>Don&#8217;t Look Now<\/em><\/strong>),Michael Caine (<strong><em>The Black Windmill<\/em><\/strong>), Maggie Smith (<strong><em>The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie<\/em><\/strong>) as well as the great eccentric Glenda Jackson (<strong><em>Hopscotch<\/em><\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In collaboration with the Locarno Film Festival, from May 22 to June 4 the programme welcomes a selection of seven titles from last summer\u2019s big LFF retrospective dedicated to <strong>DOUGLAS SIRK<\/strong>, the unparalleled master of 1950\u2019s Hollywood melodrama, including <strong><em>Magnificent Obsession<\/em><\/strong>,<strong><em> All That Heaven Allows<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Written on the Wind<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Imitation of Life<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Has Anybody Seen My Gal<\/em><\/strong>,<strong><em> The Tarnished Angels<\/em><\/strong>, and<strong><em> A Time to Love and a Time to Die<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Running in parallel with the Sirk focus, a homage to the golden years of <strong>MEXICAN CINEMA<\/strong> from the late thirties to the fifties: a unique opportunity to discover or rediscover fundamental directors such as Emilio Fern\u00e1ndez (<strong><em>Enamorada<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>The Pearl<\/em><\/strong>) and Roberto Gavald\u00f3n (<strong><em>La otra<\/em><\/strong>;<strong><em> In the Palm of Your Hand<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>La noche avanza<\/em><\/strong>)<em>,<\/em> but also to see again Luis Bunuel\u2019s Mexican films such as <strong><em>Los olvidados <\/em><\/strong>and <strong><em>Ensayo de un crimen<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The XX SECOLO.
